It was an important, repeated note, and it was totally MIA. On a track selected by the company to demonstrate the excellence of their new loudspeakerand indeed the new loudspeaker was excellenta note went missing from the bassline. It was a day of new-product demos, and I was the latest in a long procession of audio reviewers being hosted by the company in one-hour listening sessions. The only thing in doubt is whether those deviations from neutrality are serious enough to detract from the pleasure you take in your music.Ī few months before the plague hit, early on a sunny afternoon, I was at the headquarters of a well-known audio company, seated in the sweet spot in a small listening room. Play an immaculately recorded piece of music, in any room, and no matter how fancy and expensive your audio system is, some bass notes will be too loud while others are too soft. Favorable dimensions, sound-absorbing furnishings, room treatments, signal processingmany things can mitigate the problem, but it can never be eliminated. Every domestic listening room shares the same basic problem: Its most fundamental natureits size and shape, the amount of space it carves outresults in resonances that can profoundly alter the sound of reproduced music, especially in the bass (footnote 2). Not that there's such a thing as a perfect listening room. I like real, imperfect things (footnote 1). Their character arises from their defects. Nevertheless, this experience was still one of our favorite things we did in Nashville.Listening rooms are real, imperfect places. I did not even realize my son's order had been wrong until the next day, so not sure if we paid for the single or double meat platter. Not sure if the waiter could not hear us well, or whether he or the kitchen messed up the order, but once the show starts, the venue is quite dark and they ask to keep talking to a minimum and we did not want to cause a disturbance, so just ate what we were served. The food itself was good, I particularly liked the apple turkey sandwich, which would have even been better if the cranberry bread was warm/toasted, and the brussel sprout side was delicious. Second, we ordered a turkey sandwich, plain, but it came out with all the fixings on it anyway. First, we ordered a 2-meat platter that only came out with one meat. And, two of our four entrees were incorrect. Our appetizer came out with our entrees, which was disappointing and strange. We ordered drinks and food (easily reaching our $15 minimum per person) and this is where our experience was blemished. Not sure it would be a great place for younger kids, though, as there are lots of adult themes in the music & stories and they need to be able to keep quiet for 2 hours. This is a family friendly venue and our teenagers both enjoyed it even though country music is not their favorite music genre. We greatly enjoyed the venue and the show. They interacted nicely with each other and the audience. Loved their stories about how they got ideas for their songs and their insight on the music writing process. Loved the 2-hour show - four singer/songwriters from Big Loud Publishing who took turns singing their songs and playing guitar. Tables were quite close together, but not uncomfortably so and views of the elevated stage were good. There is valet parking, though we did not use it as we walked from our Airbnb, and we were glad of that because after the show there was a long line of folks waiting for their cars. Loved the outside retaining its rustic appearance (a red metal former International Harvester business). There was quite a long line for checking in, but the line moved. They announced that it was a sold-out show. We had reserved seats three days prior for the Big Loud Takeover on Tuesday, July 12 at 8:30 pm.
